Kensington, London. The popular artist Sir William Russell Flint R.A. is seen at work. Various shots of Sir William painting and C/Us of his sketches. He hands a sketch to a model who takes it away behind some curtains. Sir William tends to his tubes of paint and brushes whist she changes into an old fashioned dress and does her hair in a style to match the sketch. She emerges through the curtains and does a twirl for Sir William. He approves. She sits on a chair and Sir William arranges her hands and dress. 30-minute program produced in 1991 traces the history of the Flint Institute of Arts from a 1927 initiative by local leaders, located above Reo Samon’s Garage, through its various relations with the Flint School of Art and Design, the Durant Hotel, the Bronson Fisher Building, to its present (1991) position as the centerpiece of Flint’s Cultural Center. The history develops from the basement of a small bungalow on Calumet Street frequented by C. S. Mott, Harlow Curtis (President, General Motors), as well as dignitaries who passed through Flint, including General Douglas McArthur and Richard Nixon. This episode shows extensive footage in the home of Mike Gorman, a place affectionately called Club Calumet and the basement bar room where the power brokers of Flint met in the 1940’s and 1950’s...
Every summer, Flint Public Art Project collaborates with neighborhood organizations in the hardest-hit parts of the city to create unexpected site-specific art installations on vacant houses and in underutilized spaces, creating monthly spectacles that bring life to the streets, connect communities, and beautify neighborhoods.
